How can I create a CSR in Apache?

Authors list

In order to create a CSR in Apache, take the following steps:

1. Open the remote connection and navigate to the folder where you wish to create the CSR.

2. Run the following command:

openssl req -out CSR.csr -new -newkey rsa:4096 -nodes -keyout privatekey.key

3. Fill in the following fields in Latin characters:

Field                                         Example

Country Name           GR (the first 2 letters)

State or Province       Attiki (written in full)

Locality                      Kifisia (written in full)

Organization              Top.Host (written in full)

Organizational Unit    Support (optional, you can enter one of the company’s departments)

Common Name (domain name)

Email                 (email address)

NOTE: The email address is essential for issuing the CSR, therefore, that field is mandatory.

Avoid using the following symbols < > ~ ! @ # $ % ^ * / \ ( ) ?.,& and do not fill in the challenge password as it could create problems with the issuing authority.

If you followed the above procedure, you now have the private key (privatekey.key) which must remain on your computer as well as the Certificate Signing Request (CSR.csr)

Both files, can be seen with a text editor such as Notepad++.
